From January 22nd (Fri) to March 28th (Sun), 2027, the “Mamoru Hosoda’s Origins/Exhibition” will be held at the Fukuoka Art Museum. Focusing on “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,” “Summer Wars,” and “Wolf Children,” the exhibition will showcase production materials such as storyboards, layouts, original drawings, and art boards. There will be exhibits that delve into the “origins” of Hosoda’s work before “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,” as well as an area where visitors can experience the world of “OZ” from Summer Wars. In addition, more than 100 original goods exclusive to this exhibition will be available.

We’ll delve into the “origins” of “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time”!

From his student works to his representative works, this book traces the creative trajectory of director Mamoru Hosoda.

This exhibition features not only representative works such as “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,” “Summer Wars,” and “Wolf Children,” but also works from his time as a director before “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,” independent animations he made on 8mm film during his junior high school years, live-action films he created while at Kanazawa College of Art, and oil paintings. It unravels the origins of director Mamoru Hosoda’s creativity through a variety of production materials.

The venue will also feature an exhibit that takes advantage of the 5-meter high ceiling, allowing visitors to experience the world of “OZ,” the virtual internet world featured in “Summer Wars.” Two life-sized figures of “King Kazma” and “Love Machine” will also be on display.

Furthermore, the exhibition will feature over 300 production materials, including storyboards, layouts, director’s revisions, original drawings, art boards, and character design documents. Please enjoy the exhibition space, which is unique to this exhibition, the largest in scale to date.

Mamoru Hosoda Profile

Animation film director

Born in 1967 in Toyama Prefecture, he joined Toei Animation (formerly Toei Doga) in 1991. He has worked as an animator and director. He directed “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” (2006) and “Summer Wars” (2009), gaining attention both domestically and internationally. His films “Wolf Children” (2012) and “The Boy and the Beast” (2015), for which he served as director, screenwriter, and original creator, were huge hits. “Mirai” (2018) won an Annie Award and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. “The Dragon and the Freckled Princess” (2021) was selected for the Cannes Premières section of the Cannes International Film Festival’s official selection. “Endless Scarlet” (2025) won three awards at the 53rd Annie Awards for Best Independent Animated Feature Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, attracting attention worldwide.

About CREATIVE MUSEUM TOKYO

Located on the 6th floor of the TODA BUILDING in Kyobashi, Tokyo, CREATIVE MUSEUM TOKYO (CMT) is a museum with a ceiling height of 5m and a vast space of approximately 1,200m² where visitors can experience the works, the artists, and even the processes behind them. It opened in November 2024 with the “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Pillar Exhibition – And to the Infinity Castle -” as its opening exhibition, and has since held exhibitions such as “Shinsuke Yoshitake Exhibition: Maybe – Extra Large Version,” “Kohei Horikoshi ‘My Hero Academia’ Original Drawings Exhibition,” and “HOKUSAI – It Was All Hokusai’s Doing.” Exhibition over the past year. It holds approximately four exhibitions per year in diverse fields, from pop culture such as anime and manga to contemporary art.
