The “Tezuka Osamu Black Jack Exhibition” will be held at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City from Saturday, April 26th to Sunday, June 22nd, 2025. This is the largest exhibition to date of the monumental medical manga “Black Jack.” Tezuka Osamu’s passion and obsession will be dissected through over 500 original manuscripts!
This exhibition is the largest in the history of Black Jack, and will display over 500 manuscripts, as well as the original magazine Weekly Shonen Champion when it was serialized, book versions published in the 1970s, and handwritten manuscripts for over 200 episodes.
The museum exhibits a wide range of items, including works influenced by various events from the Showa era when “Black Jack” was created, related materials from that time that show Tezuka Osamu’s passion and tenacity, and testimony videos that reveal the secrets of when “Black Jack” was created. You can experience everything about the internationally acclaimed manga masterpiece “Black Jack.”
Kamikai
At each venue around the country where the “Tezuka Osamu Black Jack Exhibition” has toured, two works that are common to all venues and one work exclusive to each venue have been selected as “Kamikai,” and every page of the original manuscript has been exhibited.
Kamikai at the Fukuoka venue was a “noisy suicide”
I’ll bet on the remaining 1%
Black Jack happens to be passing by when a wealthy young man attempts suicide, and with his amazing skills, revives the young man. The young man blames himself for saving his life and wishes for death, so Black Jack takes him to Dr. Kiriko…
We selected this piece because we wanted to introduce to the Fukuoka venue the characters Black Jack and Kiriko, both of whom are sincere in their approach to life and make the greatest efforts possible.
Please enjoy the original manuscripts at the venue.

*”B.J.” is an abbreviation for “Black Jack.”
It is a photo spot where you can freely take photos with characters such as Black Jack, Pinoko, Dr. Kiriko, Kisaragi Megumi, and Homma Jotaro. In Room 1, you can easily see the story of “Black Jack” by learning the backstories and mysteries of the unique characters that appear in the work along with the episodes in which they appear.
Whether you’ve read it many times before or are encountering it for the first time, you can immerse yourself in the world of Black Jack.
Room 2: The story behind the birth of B.J.

In the second room, you can see the background to how Tezuka Osamu created “Black Jack” along with materials from that time. In addition to materials from “Shin Takarajima” and “Astro Boy,” the work of Tezuka Osamu, who was called the “god” of manga, you can also see valuable materials such as materials from his time at medical school that show Tezuka Osamu’s deep connection with medicine. In addition, the manuscript of the memorable first episode in which “Black Jack” first appeared will be shown, as well as newly recorded footage for this exhibition of testimonies from Tezuka Productions associates and editors involved in the publication that reveal the secrets behind the birth of “Black Jack.”
The exhibition will reveal the secret behind Tezuka Osamu’s unprecedented idea of ”publishing a manga depicting medical topics in a boys’ magazine,” which was considered unconventional 50 years ago.

Room 3 is an impressive exhibition space with manuscripts of about 140 chapters of the manga “Black Jack.” This is the first time that manuscripts of so many episodes have been exhibited. Works are displayed by major theme, such as the journey of Black Jack and Pinoko throughout their stories, the mystery of the high charges, and works that deal with the lives of animals. You can enjoy the exhibition from various perspectives, such as solving questions related to “Black Jack” and discovering the backstory. Also, do not miss the exhibit related to the “star system” created by Tezuka, in which the characters of his works are treated like actors and appear in various works.
Visitors can enjoy the wide variety of stories in “Black Jack” as if they were wandering through the “Black Jack Universe.” Each visitor is sure to encounter a “Black Jack” they have seen before, and may even discover new charms of “Black Jack” that they have never known before.
Room 4 B.J. Resuscitation

I love Pinoko ©Tezuka Productions
Black Jack still feels fresh even today. Room 4 explores the appeal of Tezuka Osamu’s most popular work, Black Jack, from the perspectives of the present and the past. There will be an exhibition that looks at the “human surgery scenes” that astonished and fascinated readers at the time from a modern art perspective, as well as a corner that looks at Black Jack from a medical perspective, which is also respected by medical professionals working on the front lines. In addition, Black Jack, which was serialized weekly, weaves incidents, events, and trends from the Showa era into its story. There will also be a corner that interprets Black Jack with news footage from the time, to see how these are actually depicted in the manga.
Enjoy the charm of “Black Jack” brought back to life in modern times.
